Update May 2023: Unfortunately due to high patient numbers we are no longer in a position to take on any new patients under the medical card scheme.  We will continue to provide treatment for our existing medical card patients.

The Dental Treatment Services Scheme (DTSS) provides access to dental treatment for adult medical card holders aged 16 years of age and over.

From 1/5/22 a free oral examination and scale & polish every calendar year and free emergency dental treatment for relief of pain and sepsis are available to all eligible patients with a dentist registered with the scheme. This includes 2 fillings per annum and all extractions. In Sandycove Dental Care Dr Ciaran O hUiginn is the dentist who is registered for this scheme.

Most other treatments require prior approval from the Local Principal Dental Officer with the HSE. Approval is currently being restricted to patients with special needs, high risk patients and those who have greater clinical needs.

If you hold a GP Visit card, unfortunately you are not covered for any free dental treatment.

Children under 16 with medical cards are eligible to be seen in their local HSE Dental Clinic.
