Dr Garry Heavey qualified from Trinity College Dublin with a B.A. and a Bachelor of Dental Science and after some years working abroad, moved back to Ireland. He took over the practice in Sandycove and has developed it into a successful, modern practice employing nineteen professionals dedicated to providing state of the art dental care.


Garry has a Post Graduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry from T.C.D and a MGDS from the Royal College of Surgeons. He is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists. Garry has a keen interest in cosmetic dentistry and over the years has completed many complex aesthetic cases.


Garry is a Past President of the Irish Dental Association and the Irish Dental Council. He has been a member of the Board of the Dublin Dental Hospital, the Post Graduate Medical and Dental Board and he was a founding member of the Irish Faculty of Primary Dental Care. He was the Dental Legal Consultant for Dental Protection Ltd in Ireland and a member of their International Board.
For many years he chaired the Continuing Education Committee of the Irish Dental Association.


Garry has lectured both nationally and internationally on a wide range of dental topics and he and the team in Sandycove have run courses for the profession on modern dental practice.


The youngest of Garry’s three sons Cathal has qualified from Manchester Dental School, winning the Preston medal for the first place in his finals, and has now joined the Practice. 

Dr. Sean Malone

Dr. Sean Malone qualified from Trinity College Dublin in 1980. He worked in the Dublin Dental Hospital for a year and then moved to England where he worked for another year in Liverpool Dental Hospital.  He then worked in his own practice in Preston, Lancashire until 1990 before returning to Ireland and joining Sandycove Dental Care.

He again worked in the Dublin Dental Hospital for 2 days a week treating patients who were referred. This included implant treatment, patients who had had treatment for oral cancer and complicated root treatments. 

During this time he obtained his Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He also taught the dental students as a lecturer.

In 2000 he became a full-time partner at Sandycove Dental Care. As part of his commitment to keeping up to date, he gained his Diploma in Clinical Dentistry from Trinity College Dublin in 2002. Since then he has attended many courses and spent 6 months in 2007 completing the Ab Initio training programme for cosmetic white fillings in London and Italy, run by Dr Lorenzo Vanini and Dr David Klaff.  In 2013 Sean completed training in London on the Cerec digital crown system which does away with the need to take impressions.

In 2008 he won the prize for the best clinical demonstration at the annual conference of the Irish Dental Association.  In June 2008 he was elected a Fellow of the International College of Dentistry in recognition of his services to dentistry.

Sean has been a board member of the Faculty of Dentistry in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and he examines in Ireland and overseas in their postgraduate examinations.  He is also a Past President of the Dublin branch of the Irish Dental Association.  He was President of the Irish Dental Association for 2013/2014.

Sean was the chair of the Scientific Committee of the Faculty of Dentistry RCSI from 2012-2018 and has organised their Annual Scientific conferences.  He spoke at the 2018 conference on “Dental Management of the patient with Diabetes”.

Sean is married to Norma and they have three children – Ailbhe, Rob and Rory.  He is a keen golfer whose handicap fluctuates between five and seven.  His other passion is singing – he sang with the RTE Philarmonic Choir for four years and also sang with the Dun Laoghaire Choral Society.

Dr. Ciaran O hUiginn

Dr Ciaran O’hUiginn graduated in 1979 from Trinity College Dublin with a B.A. and a Bachelor of Dental Science.

After qualifying he worked in a general dental practice in the U.K as the Principal Dentist.  In 1995 he headed to Sydney, Australia where he joined a busy general practice. After 4 years there he returned to Ireland and began working here in Sandycove.  He became a partner in Sandycove Dental Care in 2001.

In 2002 he completed the examination in Clinical Dentistry and gained his Post Graduate Diploma from T.C.D.

He has a commitment to continuing professional development and further education and regularly attends courses and lectures in the Dublin Dental Hospital and with the Metropolitan Branch of the IDA to keep up to date with the changes in modern dentistry.

He is a member of the Irish Dental Association and the Irish Endodontic Society.

He is married to Janet, an Australian vet and has 3 sons.He is a keen golfer in Grange Golf Club and is currently playing to a handicap of 12.  He also plays bridge in the Blackrock Bridge Club.

Dr. Lorna McCourt

Dr Lorna McCourt qualified from the University of Leeds in 1995.

She was awarded the Watssman prize in Clinical Dental Excellence.

She also received the Percy Leigh Gold Medal For Restorative Dentistry.

She completed her vocational training in a busy general practice in Yorkshire. She also worked as a general dental practitioner in Glasgow for a year.

Lorna temporarily left general practice for 2 years to further her post graduate training, first within the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery unit in Newcastle General Hospital. She then expanded her training in the Dublin Dental Hospital gaining valuable experience, especially in the area of restorative dentistry. She remains committed to continuing dental education.

Lorna joined the team here at Sandycove Dental Care in 2000. She has gained a reputation for pain free dentistry with gentle hands and has a particular interest in complex restorative and cosmetic dentistry.

She also finds treating children and anxious patients especially rewarding.

Lorna lives in Blackrock with her husband Darren and their three children.  Spare time is considered a major luxury in the McCourt household, but she enjoys hill-walking, cycling and reading should she be lucky enough to have the time!

Dr Cathal Heavey qualified from The University of Manchester with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS). While studying there he achieved the SOMANDA (Alumni Association for Manchester School of Dentistry) award for the top overall results in fourth year examinations and the following year he was awarded the Charles H Preston Medal for the highest results in the final examinations.

Once qualified, Cathal spent two years in the UK – based in Cardiff. During this time, he split his work between the University of Cardiff Dental Hospital and an outreach general Practice in the Welsh Valleys. Whilst in Cardiff Hospital he gained valuable experience working under consultants in the areas of Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Periodontology and Emergency Dentistry. The rest of his working time was spent in the Welsh Valleys where he worked in an area of high dental need treating complex restorative cases. Whilst there Cathal took part in over 50 additional day courses developing all areas of his dental skills and knowledge.

During his time in the UK he obtained the Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS) of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Cathal is committed to continued education and in 2020 completed a Masters in Restorative Dentistry, with Distinction, from the University of Birmingham.

Cathal takes a keen interest in treating anxious patients, particularly those who have not attended the dentist for some time and he finds these cases particularly rewarding.

Cathal has always been very active and in his free time can be found bringing his golden retriever for a run or a hike in the Wicklow Mountains.

Cathal is looking forward to joining the Sandycove Dental Care Team soon.

Ms. Mary-Clare Mulloy

Mary Clare Mulloy started working in March 1986 for Dr Heavey as his Dental Nurse. She qualified from the Dublin Dental Hospital as a Dental Nurse in 1987 and continued to work in the practice until she went travelling to Australia in 1989.

On returning from Australia a year later she was accepted to Liverpool Dental Hospital where she qualified as a Dental Hygienist in 1991 – winning the Oral B Cup for 1st place.  She worked as Staff Hygienist in Liverpool Dental Hospital and also in private practice before coming back to Dublin in April 1992.

She returned to Sandycove Dental Care as a Dental Hygienist in March 1994 and has been here since, where she works 4 days a week.

In 1998 she completed a course in Local Anaesthesia which allows her to administer injections to patients who require it.

She really enjoys the relationship she has built up with her patients over the years.  She has considerable experience in general practice and also in specialist practices including a Periodontal practice where, as well as her duties as a hygienist, she assisted in implant surgery.  She also worked in an Orthodontic practice, dealing with children and teenagers.

Mary-Clare enjoys keeping fit and active; her hobbies include running, walking/hiking with her dog. She has completed a few sprint triathlons and ran the Berlin Marathon in 2009- coming in at a very respectable time. 

SharonMcGovern

Mrs. Sharon McGovern

Sharon started as a dental nurse in the University Hospital of Wales in her home town on Cardiff. She then qualified as a Dental Hygienist from Guys’ Dental School in London in 1987.

Following a number of years working in London practices she moved to Ireland in 1997 where she has worked as a hygienist with both general and specialist practices.

Sharon joined Sandycove Dental Care in April 2013 originally as temporary cover for a colleague who was on sick leave. Sharon now works with us one day a week and spends the rest of her working time in another practice.
Sharon is qualified in administering local anaesthesia to patients who require it. She is also qualified in CPR.

Sharon lives in Wicklow with her four children and two dogs. In her spare time she enjoys swimming and going to the gym. She is also a keen horse rider at competitive level.

Mrs. Fiona Heavey

Fiona has been working in Sandycove as a dental nurse since early 1990.

She obtained her dental nursing qualifications from The Dublin Dental Hospital in 1992.   She is also certified in CPR.

2009 saw her leave nursing behind and can now be found working as Clinical Manager for the practice and as part of the reception team.  

She is responsible for the implementation of all aspects of cross infection control measures and ensures we are compliant in relation to the Dental Council of Ireland.  As a result of her experience she has lectured and run workshops for the Irish Dental Association.

In the summer of 2015 herself and Garry Heavey were married and in her spare time she enjoys cooking, gardening, travelling and walking.

Sarah joined Sandycove Dental Care in July 2016. She came to us with a varied work experience ranging from beauty to travel and tourism. Sarah is a native of Sandycove/Glasthule and is delighted to be working so close to home. In her spare time she likes to do yoga and has just started salsa dancing.
